What are PGP and SPD?

Pelvic girdle pain (PGP) and symphysis pubis dysfunction (SPD) are two common conditions that many pregnant women experience. However, they are not the same. While both conditions involve pain in the pelvic region, the location and severity of the pain are distinctly different.

PGP

PGP is a term used to describe pain that occurs in the whole pelvic region during pregnancy. It can be felt in the back, hips, groin, and thighs. The pain can be mild or severe and can vary from woman to woman. PGP is generally caused by the relaxation of the ligaments and joints in the pelvic area, which puts extra stress on the muscles and causes pain.

SPD

SPD, on the other hand, is a more specific type of pelvic pain that occurs when the symphysis pubis joint, which connects the two halves of the pelvis, becomes unstable, inflamed or, in very rare circumstances, slightly misaligned. This can result in severe pain in the pelvic region and groin and difficulty walking, standing, or sitting.

What to do

Both PGP and SPD can be treated with osteopathy, as we focus on improving the function of the musculoskeletal system (bones, muscles, ligaments, tendons and their nerve and blood supply).

Osteopathic treatment for PGP and SPD usually involves a combination of gentle hands-on techniques, such as massage, stretching, and mobilisation of the joints and associated areas, as well as exercises to strengthen the muscles in the pelvic region. We can also provide advice on posture and guidance on activities to avoid to reduce the risk of further injury.

Osteopathy is a safe and effective way to treat PGP and SPD during pregnancy, as it does not involve the use of medication or invasive procedures. It can also be used alongside other treatments that you may already be utilising, such as yoga, pilates or acupuncture. Sometimes people also combine aromatherapy or other relaxing therapies, to provide a holistic approach to pain relief and function.
