Frequently Asked Questions

1 Will osteopathy hurt?   |   What should I expect during treatment?

Most people are pleasantly surprised by how comfortable osteopathic treatment feels. Rather than something being "done to you," think of each session as a collaborative process where your comfort guides every decision we make.

You may notice pressure or gentle stretching during certain techniques. That sensation is your body beginning to respond. We explain each technique before we use it, and we work entirely within your comfort level throughout.

Some people experience mild aching for 24-48 hours after their first session, similar to the feeling after a good workout. This is a normal and encouraging sign - it means your tissues are adapting and the process of change has begun.

Techniques we use at Bolton Osteopathic Clinic Soft tissue massage • gentle joint articulation • muscle energy technique • cranial osteopathy. These are the foundations of most treatments. Spinal manipulation (which can produce a "clicking" sound) is always completely optional - if you'd prefer to avoid it, we consistently achieve excellent outcomes with gentle approaches alone.

Our practitioners Alex Green (25+ years' experience), Rose Rana, and Henna Javed tailor every session to what feels right for you. You're always in control.
2 How many sessions will I need for back pain, neck pain, or sciatica?

Treatment duration depends on your condition and how long you've had it. The good news is that most people notice real, meaningful change sooner than they expect. As a general guide, to take you from pain to a point where larger gaps between preventative maintenance treatments are possible:

Acute injuries (under 6 weeks ago) Recent back pain, neck pain, or sports injuries typically respond well within 6-8 sessions over 5-7 weeks - and many people feel a significant shift much sooner.
Chronic conditions (3+ months) Long-standing back pain, neck pain, or sciatica usually benefit from a longer treatment course - though most patients notice meaningful progress within the first 3-6 sessions, even with issues they've carried for years.

At your first appointment, we'll build a realistic, personalised treatment plan around your specific condition, medical history, and recovery goals. We reassess progress every 3-4 sessions so we can keep moving you forward at the best possible pace.

3 Is osteopathy safe for babies and young children?

Yes - osteopathy is a safe, gentle treatment suitable for babies and children of all ages. Osteopaths are statutorily regulated primary healthcare professionals, and undergraduate osteopathic training includes paediatrics.

Alex Green brings several decades of clinical experience in paediatric osteopathy, and Rose Rana also treats babies and children across our Bolton and Manchester clinics. You and your child are in experienced, caring hands.

What to expect at a baby appointment Because babies' skeletons are softer than an adult's, we use cranial osteopathy - applying less than 5 grams of pressure (lighter than the weight of a coin). Your baby stays clothed throughout, and you remain present for every moment of the session. Most babies relax deeply, or fall asleep, during treatment.

Baby appointments are 30 minutes (starting at £59) at our Bolton and Manchester clinics.

5 What's the difference between osteopathy, physiotherapy, and chiropractic?

We have an exhaustive blog post on this but here's a quick summary: All three professions treat musculoskeletal pain - back pain, neck pain, sports injuries - but take different approaches. Understanding those differences helps you choose the path that's right for you.

Osteopathy A holistic approach that looks at how your body's structure and function work together - not just the site of pain. Sessions run 30-60 minutes, using hands-on manual therapy: soft tissue work, joint articulation, spinal manipulation, and cranial osteopathy, alongside bespoke rehabilitation and strengthening exercises. Regulated by the General Osteopathic Council (GOsC). 4-5 years' training.
Physiotherapy Focuses on rehabilitation through targeted exercises, manual therapy, and patient education - often within NHS or post-surgical pathways.
Chiropractic Primarily centres on spinal alignment using spinal adjustments, typically in shorter but more frequent sessions.

At Bolton Osteopathic Clinic, all of our osteopaths are GOsC-registered: Alex Green (Clinic Director, 25+ years' experience), Rose Rana (women's health specialist), and Henna Javed (back pain and postural specialist). First appointments are 60 minutes (from £83); follow-ups are 30 minutes (from £59).

All three professions can be effective - the right choice simply depends on your condition, your preferences, and what resonates with you. If you're not sure, call us for a friendly, no-obligation chat.
